(Kindly scroll down for Content in English)

The end of the beginning:

At HBL we are wrapping up “Phase 1” of content production for our graded readers.

In “Phase 1” the goal was the completion of 20 or more online titles for each level (1-7) of our graded scale.  In the weeks ahead a total of 240 titles will be finally uploaded online. This corpus creates a significant volume of diverse stories and a graded progression for the reader and teachers to repurpose for their needs. For language learning, volume matters. The first title was uploaded in June 2020. We have on average produced 2 titles every week.

This ending of phase 1 is a significant milestone as it confirms that 1) creating materials through an open-source, community & volunteer-based publishing model is viable, 2) minimal resources are needed 3) richer and more varied content is created as compared to traditional for-profit publishing.

For any foundational learning resource corpus, an open-source and copyright-free model is the most inclusive. We hope that this sharing model becomes the default for Cantonese learning materials.

In the weeks ahead, we will document this journey through a series of blog posts: where we began and what we now understand. We will try to answer some questions for ourselves.

In closing, I thank the incredibly talented and generous pool of our contributors and volunteers for believing in the necessity of what we were attempting and for giving so generously.

If you find our materials worthy, please kindly give us a hand and let others know.

Thank you.
